In order for your satellite phone to work, you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky. Any solid structure (buildings or other obstructions) will block the signal. Satellite phones will not work inside, in vehicles or underground. If you are surrounded by tall structures, in a city setting for instance, reception might also be hard to obtain. The antenna needs to be extended and pointed towards the sky. Detailed instructions are provided with the quick start guide that comes with each phone.
Text messaging and voicemail are standard features for all satellite phones. You can even send text messages for free to any satellite phone with the online text messaging service. Each phone also comes with its own e-mail address and can receive e-mails of 160 characters max. Data is available with satellite phones, if the phone is used as a wireless modem with a laptop or similar. The speeds are between 2.4 and 9.6kbps, which is significantly slower than dial-up speeds. Yes, you can call 911 in the US. If you are traveling outside the US, please dial 112. We also recommend pre-programming one or more local emergency numbers into your phone if you are traveling outside the US.
You can place a free test call from your satellite phone to test its functionality. For Iridium handsets call 1-480-752-5105. If your phone is working, you will hear a call completion confirmation message as well some quick tips on proper handset usage. Each rental kit comes with the phone, battery, wall charger, international plug adapters, a Pelican carry case for all items, and a quick start guide.
No. We understand that many people take a satellite phone on their trip purely for emergencies. You only get charged for the airtime you actually use during your trip.
No. All our rental phones are post-paid and you will never run out of minutes. You will get charged for the airtime used on the 10th of each month for the previous calendar month. If you rental is in 2 or more calendar months, you will receive 2 or more airtime invoices.
The standard rental package is usually sufficient for most customers. The battery included in the rental package has a long standby time and charges quickly. Extra batteries, car chargers, data kits and auxiliary antennas (Iridium only) are available as add-ons if needed.
To minimize time in traffic, we send out all of our phones for next day delivery with UPS. Return labels are not provided; you are responsible for shipping the phone back.
In case you need the phone longer than expected, your rental is extended at the existing daily rates. Please notify Telestial if you plan to keep the phone longer, by contacting customer service via e-mail or phone.
In case that a phone is returned 5 or more days prior to initial rental end day, you will be refunded for the applicable days.
Call records are available upon request on the 10th of each month for the previous calendar month.
