Using your Smartphone as a Personal Hotspot

What is a Personal Hotspot?

Many of the latest smartphones allow you to use them as personal hotspots, also referred to as 'Tethering'. This means you can share the internet connection from your mobile with your other devices, such as laptops and tablets.

So for example, if you have an Android handset with tethering capabilities, you can connect your iPad to the internet by connecting it to your Android's WiFi hotspot.

How do I set up tethering?
For details on how to set up tethering on your device, please refer to the list below. If your smartphone manufacturer is not listed, please refer to the manufacturer's website for details.

Apple iPhone & iPad

The table below lists the iPhones and iPads (Wi-Fi + Cellular models) capable of Personal Hotspot and which connections they can use to share cellular data with another device:

* on iPhone 3G, Personal Hotspot is referred to as Internet Tethering.

Use the following steps to set up Personal Hotspot:

Select 'Settings' > 'General' > 'Network'

Tap Personal Hotspot and turn it on
(iPhone 3 interface referes to this as Internet Tethering)

Choose whether to enable Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and USB
(Wi-Fi requires iPhone 4 or later, or iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular)

After configuring Personal Hotspot, you can directly acces the settings from 'Settings' > 'Personal Hotspot'

Search for your newly created WiFi hotspot using your computer or other WiFi enabled device.

Android Devices including JT Smart

WiFi tethering

Select 'Settings'  >  'More...'  >  'Tethering and portable hotspot'

Select 'Configure Wi-Fi hotspot' to customise the WLAN hotspot:

Network SSID
This is the device name that will be shown to external devices.

Security Select the security type.

When you are finished, select 'Save'.

From another device, locate your Samsung device's name in the available connection list and connect to the network.

HTC

Select 'Settings' > 'Wireless & networks' > 'Portable WiFi hotspot settings'

Tick Portable WiFi Hotspot and follow the prompts.

Router name SSID - Enter the name
This is the device name that will be shown to external devices.

Security - Select the security type.

When you are finished, select Save.

From another device, locate your HTC device's name in the available connection list and connect to the network.
