About the Peter the Great promotion
Going to Russia and thought you could never afford your own Russia cell phone? Think again.
Peter Alexevitch, also known as Peter the Great, is certainly one of the best known Tsars of Russia. His attempts to modernize his country by force are famous. Standing at 6' 8", and rising each day before four in the morning, he was truly a tsar to be reckoned with.
Peter ascended to the highest position in Russia when his brother Ivan (who he co-ruled Russia with - talk about sibling rivalry!) died in 1696. During his reign as tsar, Peter engineered a series of reforms that were to put Russia among the major European powers. Peter opened Russia to the West, regained access to the Baltic Sea and Baltic trade and moved the Russian capital to St. Petersburg. Peter the Great also established the Senate as an important arm of the government, boosted national trade and organized the Russian army and navy.
Peter's personality has raised many questions for almost three centuries. He was an experienced army officer and navy admiral, a skillful shipbuilder and an amazingly energetic personality. It has to be said that Peter was also very cruel. Several coup attempts against him ended with "unpleasant outcomes" for the opposition leaders. Nevertheless, the scale of Peter's personality and massive reforms have inspired generations of historians, writers and ordinary people.
