About the Zappa Lives! promotion
Lithuania might not be the only country to boast a Frank Zappa fan club, but it certainly is the most unusual. The fact that the 70s folksinger never stepped foot in this tiny Baltic nation didn't stop the Lithuania Frank Zappa fan club from erecting a bust of Zappa after his death in 1994, replete with pony-tail and somber gaze.
The bust of Zappa was made by the 70-year-old local sculptor Konstantinas Bogdanas, a man who was previously known for his depictions of the likes of Lenin and other communist heroes. The bust of Zappa rests in a peaceful park, just a thirty-second walk from one of Vilnius's (the capital city) main drags. The construction company that installed Zappa's 4.2-meter high bronze bust did so in exchange for a bottle of liquor. We're not sure who got the better of that deal, but we would have liked to be at the after party!
This is not the first example of Lithuanians embracing the weird and wacky. In 1992 the country's basketball team achieved international fame by defeating Russia to take the bronze medal at the Barcelona Olympic Games. The team turned up at the awards ceremony in psychedelic multi-colored T-shirts donated by the legendary rock band, The Grateful Dead. Crazy, man...
