By 1837, the British had procured a monopoly on Opium sales, which directly led to the Opium War of 1839-42. The incident that sparked this trade war occurred when the Chinese imperial government confronted foreign merchant ships and demanded they surrender their illegal cargo.
The first Opium War ended badly for the Chinese on Aug. 29, 1842 with the Treaty of Nanking forcing the Chinese government to pay $15 million to the British merchants and ceding Hong Kong to the British. Hong Kong remained a protectorate of the English until it was turned back over to China in 2000.
The moral of this story (in the smallest nutshell in the world) is that drugs are bad.. But money-saving cell phone promotions are good!!!
